Banshees - Ireland - Beautiful female spirits who sing mournfully to foretell a death in the family.	Obambo - Central Africa - Someone who dies in the bush and is left without a grave may come back as a ghost called an obambo. relatives quickly build a new hut and give it a funeral.	Soho - Japan - A Sojo ghost haunts the ocean. They don't mind humans and they love offerings os sake (rice wine), so sailors don't mind having them around.
Zombies - Caribbean - Zombies are dead bodies without a spirit. They are brought back to life by evil sorcerers to be used as slaves.	Silkies - England and Scotland - Ghosts who do chores around the house are known as silkies and are treated with respect.	Bhut - India - Hindus who die violently or don't get a proper funeral may come back as bhuts. There ghosts are especially mean to newlyweds, women and children.
Domovoy - Russia - A domovoy is a ghost who does all the housework as long as you are nice to it.	Hopping Ghost - China - A hopping ghost is so stiff with decay that it can hardly walk. It can only hop along. They say this ghost is so rotten that it's smell can kill you!	Day of the Dead - Mexico - on November 2, Mexicans celebrate Day of the Dead. Food, drink and flowers are laid out for the spirits of the dead, and people dress up like skeletons and dance through the streets.

Toyol - This is a spirit which is kept in a jar with some special liquid to preserve it. The toyol is kept by people to do their bidding, but the price for keeping it is you HAVE to feed it your own blood EVERYDAY. Some toyols have special 'needs' as well. If the spirit is that of a child, you'd usually have to provide it with a couple of toys to play with. If money goes missing and white ants (or termites) are found where the money should have been, the toyol has just done its bidding for their master. They are found in Singapore.

Pontianak - This is perhaps the most frightening of all ghosts and ghouls of South East Asia. It is said that the pontianak is the spirit of a woman who died of childbirth. Sometimes she can look very beautiful, but most of the time she has razor teeth and stalks the night in search for men or pregnant women (it is said she could not bear the thought of other women being able to enjoy motherhood) There are many different stories of the pontianak, most in Malaysia.

Kum Kum - The Kum Kum is an old witch who attacks young women in her attempt to regain her youth and beauty. According to legend, she got her name as she cannot say the whole Malay greeting and can only say these 2 syllables.

Jiang-Shi - Jiang-shi is the Chinese vampire. Does the same thing as Dracula and sucks blood, but they can only hop around with their arms outstretched. They don't talk at all & you can escape them by throwing a handful of glutinous rice. The grains will hit the Jiang-shi like little firecrackers, giving you time to make your get-away.

Watpapum - One kind of Thai ghost, the male watpapum, is luckily provided with a free home in the shape of a miniturized Thai temple, located strategically and placed around EVERY house in Thailand. Whether this home is small or large depends heavily on the owner of the protecting home and his budget or fear. But at least this spirit is not homeless. Although the price is high: He has to protect the house and its owners to his full extent and it is believed that he is doing his duty fairly well.

The Legless Ghost - Japanese ghosts were believed to be deformed as a punishment for evil deeds when alive. Many were legless, their lower limbs engulfed in flames. According to legend, they warned people when death was near.

The Eating Ghost - The people of the Banks Islands in the Pacific Ocean believed that
certain stones were haunted by 'eating ghosts'. If a person's shadow fell across such a stone the ghost was thought to suck out the person's soul. After losing his soul, the person died. These stones were placed in empty houses to keep away thieves.

The Gibbering Ghost - (India) Indians believed in ghosts called bauta. They were hideous creatures with small, red bodies and huge, lion-like teeth. They gibbered through their noses when they spoke. They were supposed to roam at night, attacking people.

The Weeping Woman - La Llorona (pronounced Yorona)

Everyone in Mexico has heard of her. the story is very old, perhaps since before the Spanish conquest of Mexico. the story varies but essentially there was a woman who had two or three children. They drowned in a flooding river, sometimes they say that she murdered her children for the love of a man. Sometimes they say she wanted to save the children from slavery to the Spanish so she drowned them. They say that her ghost can be heard in the night crying :"ay mis hijos" (oh my children). If a man is going to cheat on his wife he might hear her. She will appear to him as a voluptuous woman but as he nears her she changes to a hag. If children act badly someone might tell them that La Llorona will take them and drown them. She is evil and a victim at the same time. I don't know how many people believe the story but it is universally known. Everyone agrees that she was a Mexican Indian. Probably Aztec or maybe Huasteco. She is mentioned in songs and other stories. She is the subject of artwork.

The Waterfall Ghost - In 1905, two men on holiday saw a pair of ghostly hands come out of a waterfall. The hands beckoned to them. Looking behind the waterfall, they found a cave with three skeletons in it.The ghostly presence had fulfilled its task -to draw attention to the remains of of the dead.
