Mount Everest

The ghost of climber Andrew Irvine who died there in 1924 haunts Mount Everest. His phantom ghost shares tents with climbers and encourages them to make the final ascent. The ghost was first reported by Dougal Haston and Doug Scott in September 1975 and has been seen several times since.

ALCATRAZ

The Miwok Indians thought evil spirits inhabited this island and never set foot until 1859, when they arrived in shackles as the island's first prisoners. By 1912, the army had built the largest reinforced concrete structure in the world: a huge fortress that would later house the nations most dangerous criminals. In 1963, the island was taken over by the National Park Service; only the ghosts of tormented inmates remain. Clanging sounds, screams, and crying can sometimes be heard in Cell Block A. Disturbances in Cell Block C became so frequent that the park service called in psychic Sylvia Brown to try to figure out what was happening. She made contact with the spirit of a man called Butcher, who resisted all her efforts to calm his violent soul. Prison records confirmed that Abie Maldowitz, a mob hit man with the nickname of Butcher, was killed by another prisoner in the laundry room of the cell block. In Cell Block D, four cells are thought to be haunted. Strange voices have emanated from Cell 11, 12, and 13 there. Even in the summer months, Cell 14-D feels ice-cold, and some visitors have been overcome by emotion in one corner of the cell. This was the tiny cell where killer Rufe McCain was kept in solitary confinement for over three years. Sometimes the sounds of banjo playing are reported coming from the deserted shower room, where Al Capone frequently played the instrument.

Chase Crypt
Barbados, West Indies

The Chase Mauseleum in Christ Church Graveyard in Barbados, West Indies, is famous in ghostly lore. The coffins of family members buried in the early 1800s move around in the locked vault, sometimes lining up vertically along the walls. At one time, the Governor of Barbados personally sealed the vault but nine months later the coffins were all rearranged, even though all the seals had not been tampered with. Finally, the government reburied the coffins in separate places and that seemed to have stopped the phenomenon. The empty Chase vault lies open now for all to see.

The Alamo
San Antonio, Texas

For many years, people have reported strange apparitions wandering its blood-soaked grounds, eerie lights dancing on the stone walls, unexplained sounds--the screams of dying men, explosions, the chilling trumpet call of Santa Ana's band playing the Deguello.

To this day, guards, janitors, and other employees of the popular Texas tourist attraction avoid certain rooms of the battle-scarred mission at night.

One reason for all this paranormal activity is that the Alamo is a graveyard. According to Spanish records, nearly a thousand persons were buried in Alamo Plaza between 1724 and 1793. And, in 1836, 1600 Mexican soldiers and 200 Texans were killed there in one of the bloodiest battles of the Old West. The disposal of their bodies is a story in itself.

The bodies of the Mexican soldiers were at first buried in mass graves. But, when this proved too time consuming, many hundreds were thrown into the nearby San Antonio River, where for weeks they rotted in the sun, attracting flies and flocks of buzzards and spreading disease--which in turn killed more people.

As for the Alamo defenders, their bodies were piled together in three mounds in different parts of the plaza, and burned.

There was a young boy who lived in San Antonio in those days, who never forgot the sight of those funeral pyres. Many years later, as an old man, he could still recall in vivid detail the sickening stench and hideous sight of melted flesh on charred bones.

One of the most often-repeated stories of an Alamo ghost is the apparition of a small blonde-haired boy that can be seen from time to time in the left upstairs window, now the gift shop. According to legend, the little boy may have been evacuated during the siege and perhaps returns again and again to the place where he last saw his relatives. He usually appears during the same time every year, during the first weeks of February.

Toys’R’Us, Sunnyvale, CA

While many people may not think of a modern superstore as being haunted, the Toys’R’Us haunting reminds us that every plot of ground has a history. Built in 1970, the toy store is a 60,000 square foot one story building. It is located thirty miles South of San Francisco, at 130 East El Camino, in
Sunnyvale, CA. This was once an apple orchard, and part of a huge ranch owned by John Murphy during the late 1800s. Paranormal activity occurs regularly at this site. Typically, employees unlock the store in the morning and find toys and books scattered about when they had been neatly shelved the night before. Sometimes, objects fly through the air or simply end up in a different place. People have reported being touched when no one is around. Also, some have heard a voice that they didn't recognize calling their name. Aisle 15C sometimes smells of fresh flowers.
"I don't believe in ghosts," said Putt-Putt O'Brien, who has spent 18 years stacking toys at the store. "But you feel a breeze behind you. Someone calls your name and there's nobody there. Funny things happen here that you can't explain." "Many people have experiences, not just one or two of us," O'Brien said. "He's like Casper. Nothing he does ever hurt anybody." The toy store has been featured on television's That's Incredible and other shows.

The White House

President ABRAHAM LINCOLN is perhaps America's most famous ghost, and his presence is firmly established in White House lore. Calvin Coolidge's wife Grace was the first to spot the specter; she claimed to have seen Lincoln peering out of an Oval Office window. Since then various guests and residents have claimed to see the former president's ghost in the Lincoln bedroom or the upstairs halls of the White House. Even Ronald Reagan's dog Rex (according to Reagan) would bark when passing the Lincoln bedroom and refused to enter the room.

Former First Lady ELEANOR ROOSEVELT became a famous "ghost" in 1996, after Hillary Clinton said she had often felt Roosevelt's "presence" in the White House. Clinton reported that she had held imaginary conversations with Roosevelt under the guidance of Jean Houston, a specialist in myth and spirituality. Both Clinton and Houston insisted the conversations were brainstorming exercises rather than seances, but the reports got heavy coverage and the image of Clinton "talking to Eleanor's ghost".

More White House Ghosts:

Hundreds of people visit the Haunted Mansion in Disneyworld every day. In the 1940s a man who had been piloting a small plane crashed in a lake near where the park was to be built later. His ghost has settled into the Haunted Mansion. Referred to by Cast Members (employees) as "the man with the cane" he is often seen late at night, especially after closing.

~ The man in a tuxedo is another spirit, though no one really knows who he is. One day an employee was working in the area where passengers disembark. There is a mirror there, so the attendant can see when the riders come up behind her. She kept seeing a shadow in the mirror, and when she turned around no one was there. The figure seemed to be wearing a tuxedo. Then, she felt a chill and a hand placed on her shoulder. Of course, she turned to find no one there. The woman ran out of the Haunted Mansion and soon quit her job.

Tower of London

While The Tower is one of the most important buildings in the history of England, it is not much taller than a four story house. But the real treasures are inside, where the Crown Jewels are kept, including The Star of Africa, which at 530 carats is the largest diamond in the world.
